I am not a huge fan of Hepworth's work. Whilst he always seems to write about things which I want to read, I find his style quite tiresome to get through. It hurts my head, sometimes. I don't know what it is. Now the extraordinary story of Abbey Road, the most famous recording studio in the world created behind the front door of an elegant residential house in affluent St John’s Wood, has been told in thrilling (and very witty) detail by David Hepworth, one of the country’s most respected music journalists and foundereditor of some of the best music magazines — Q, The Word and Mojo. David Hepworth was in Abbey Road 12 months ago when Noel Gallagher was putting strings on his new record. The string section was downstairs. Ah, yes, he agrees. And looking at the history of Abbey Road – the history of recorded performance – it wasn’t just the public who started out confused. Early attempts at this new-found technique provoked bafflement, sometimes downright hostility, from performers, too. Emma Calvé, the great French soprano, was horrified on arrival at her first recording studio in 1902, refusing to alight from her carriage and four because the place looked more like a thieves’ den than a venue for an artiste of her standing. Only 100 guineas could change her mind. Once inside, she had to be ‘discouraged from breaking into dancing while singing as she did on stage’. Who won Great British Bake Off? Memoirs have been written, often many decades after the events, which do not always square with other memoirs. In each case there is a tendency to place the author at the centre of the most momentous events, a tendency which is entirely understandable. In other cases entire episodes have been recalled which others who were there do not remember at all. Everyone has their anecdote, the culmination of which is the blob of solder they applied, the edit they made, the suggestion they put forward which played some part in nudging in this direction or that a piece of music with which we are all familiar, deep in our bones.
