About this deal

Facilitate regular dismounting / remounting of the bike (This means a single-sided road cycling, a clipless pedal is not a good idea.).

It is safe to say that just about all the pros use XTRs. Sven Nys continues to use Shimano’s XTR line even though, as one of the sport’s best riders, he has access to prototype equipment with custom adjustments. Also though Shimano haven’t yet introduced a cyclocross version of their renowned SPD pedal system, many pros opt for the XTR race pedal due to its reliability in muddy conditions and its excellent value for money. The Eggbeater 3 is an extreme durable MTB pedal fitted with the same needle bearings as crankbrothers flagship. The body and spring are completely made out of high quality and durable stainless steel, to ensure the perfect stability and a long lifespan. The unique pedal design makes it possible to clip in on 4 sides. The waterproof seals are improved and the eggbeaters design makes it almost impossible for mud and dirt to stay attached to your pedal. My egg beater clip-in pedals are made from brushed aluminum and brass. Since they're well-made, they come apart pretty easily to clean off grit and mud. There are a couple of reasons riders like these adjustments. Some might have knee problems which require more float to take the stress off the knees. Others like to be able to move around a bit when clipped in. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the Eggbeater 3s, and I’ll definitely keep using them for mud, cyclocross, and lightweight xc race day - and to try to get to the bottom of the psychological clip-out question over the year ahead.

Crankbrothers Eggbeater 3's are light and appealing, even if they don’t clunk-click

Swapping to zero-float cleats may give a little more familiarity for SPD users, if your biomechanics allow it. I don’t know if that’s because SPDs have less float than the default Crankbrothers cleats (4 degrees vs 6), or because with zero float you know that as soon as you twist your heel you’re on your way towards clipping out, or a bit of both, but either way, they were the cleats I settled on. If the terrain you ride is somewhat extreme and requires big hit jumping, then Eggbeaters are not your best bet. Crank Brothers actually makes a wide range of other pedals for more abusive activity like downhilling. Is there a bodyweight limit for Eggbeater pedals? See the PM for more info, but of the choices, I'd prefer the 2-hole Quattro cleat. It's a bit more adjustable than the 3-hole in terms of angle and left-right as compared to the 3-hole, and the 'road' cleat allows the wings of the pedal to groove the shoe surface. The plastic of the Quattro prevents that.

The other negative is that there’s less underfoot support if you like to shift around on your pedals while standing. This wasn’t an issue for me, but Crankbrothers says that even half the xc racers who use its pedals would choose the small-platformed Candy pedals over the Eggbeater for that reason. You might also appreciate a little extra platform if you use softer shoes. The minimalist profile also offers other advantages, such as improved mud clearance. If you’re into winter riding, these pedals may be less likely to get gunked up with snow and ice as well. Will SPD cleats work on Crank Bros Egg Beaters?

hanley79 - So Crank Brothers is a good brand? I'm looking into buying a pair of these, and since they're really expensive like you said, I want to make sure I get the right pair. Crankbrothers cleats—which you can fit using the guide found in the user manual (blue above)—attach to your shoes using minimal hardware and sit flush with your tread. Credit: Crankbrothers Crank Brothers has been around since 1977. They started out in a Laguna Beach garage. Just surviving as a MTB gear maker is a huge accomplishment, let alone being a big name since the ‘70s. These guys are true industry pioneers.

When it comes to durability and reliability, Shimano pedals set the standard. For many who are just starting out in cyclocross, Shimano’s SPD- PD-M540 is the mountain bike pedal of choice. With a sturdy clip between the pedal and a hard-wearing metal cleat, as well as a design that allows mud to pass through the body of the pedal, the Shimano SPD pedal is an excellent option for cyclocross newcomers.

Most road and mountain bike pedal axle diameters are standard. You can easily mount Eggbeaters onto a road bike. But if you get seriously into road biking, you’ll probably want pedals, shoes and cleats made for road biking. When some of my riding buddies first got into the road scene, they used MTB pedal gear. All of them eventually upgraded though. Do Eggbeater pedals require special shoes? You may also like to run the pedals on your road / commuter bike. Buy a set of Quattro cleats (CRB-15289) to use on your road shoes. It makes pulling off from junctions a breeze as you have 4 points of entry to the pedals.
