About this deal

Pinky came down the stairs with a huge pink suitcase. She opened it up on the living room floor and it was an abundance of pink. Her whole house, too, was full of different shades of pink. Luncheon is a cultural magazine that combines art, fashion and food. The biannual magazine offers readers a bountiful feast for the eyes and the mind with its free content. Framed like a menu, each issue centers around a lunchtime conversation. Magazines bring generations together at the table to share opinions, stories and memories. This issue includes opinions, stories and memories, giving us insight into their unique cultural contributions.

Inspirations selected by the collective Ghetto Gastro with a conversation of explanations to the images between co-founder Jon Gray and friend and stylist Nell Kalonji LUNCHEON is an independent cultural magazine mixing art, fashion and food. Free spirited in its content this biannual magazine offers readers a generous feast for the eyes and the mind. The essence of conversations over lunch is at its core and each issue is constructed as if a menu. Over the lunch table, the magazine brings together different generations who share opinions, stories and memories, offering us an insight into their unique cultural contributions. When I was 15 and said I wanted to do photography, my careers officer told me I couldn’t. I struggled with lecturers not getting where I was coming from. One of the responses I got to my work on ragga was: “This doesn’t mean anything – it’s throwaway culture.” How can you assess my work, I wondered, if you’re not even willing to understand the culture I’m a part of? On the second cover, model Divine Mugisha is photographed by Nadine Ijewere, wearing Maison Alaïa styled by Luncheon’s fashion director-at-large Nell Kalonji, taken from the story in the magazineCouture. And on the third cover, Paolo Roversi photographs the Autumn/Winter collection by Comme des Garçons, worn by model Sihana Shalaj, styled by Robbie Spencer. Rei Kawakubo givesLuncheona special and irreverent quote about her work. Luncheon magazine is about food, but in a subtle way. The structure of the magazine is like a meal. As the content is set out like a menu. Form the front cover to the individual chapters. This structure really helps for the magazine to stand out. This was a delightful read and I’ve marked a few recipes to make as well. A visually stunning publication with interesting stories – a fabulous way to pass those lazy summer days (now I need to get my hands on other copies of LUNCHEON!). I began my career taking lots of pictures of my mum and have continued to shoot her – I love to work with lots of different types of, and generations of, people. I love the bond there is between this group. You really feel the strength of each individual person – even the little girls. Anthony – the older guy – is one of the most elegant and lovely men I’ve ever met, there’s two sets of sisters in there and most of the group knew each other before the shoot. It feels like an image about community, about standing together, which is particularly appropriate for this present time.

Top tip: Focus on one topic and keep taking photos in that environment to become an expert. If you like music, for example, stay in that area. There were 500 men going in the showers at the end of the day.” One said another documentary photographer had come to photograph the mines, but they said it felt like he had his agenda didn’t reflect how they felt. “But,” he said, “you getting naked is how I feel inside.”Luncheon Magazine Issue 15 is available now at LOREM (not Ipsum) with three covers: Divine Mugisha wears Alaïa, photographed by Nadine Ijewere, styled by Nell Kalonji, 2023 / ‘Kitchen. The visual content within the magazine will entirely inspire you to look at food in another light. The articles are written by knowledgeable writers who are involved in the culinary world. All of which could easily have left Luncheon an unpleasant, closed world of self-congratulation and in-crowd crowing. That it avoids doing so is down to the quality of the contributors; almost every one is a multi-disciplinarian at the height of their abilities, and the resulting magazine is something very special.
