About this deal

If you do much hike-a-biking, I’ve found Giro’s toe spikes are an expensive—but necessary—upgrade, considering what you actually get for the money. However, they make an already stellar pair of cycling shoes even better. Highly recommended. This is a very simple but very important question. You may have heard the old adage ‘all the gear and no idea’. This concept is very much applicable to new riders that want to make sure that they have everything they need before their first trip on the pedals.

Other downsides are few. The heel cup isn’t the snuggest even when the Boa is tight – not annoyingly so, but you might notice it for long hikes, and definitely when you’re up on your toes on a CX run. The insole is thin and flat, so your midfoot doesn’t feel quite as cocooned as it could do – but that’s a cheap fix if it bothers you.The option of fitting toe spikes caught my attention for future CX use where many racers opt for the extra traction when dismounting regularly on muddy courses.

Safety should always come first. You should never skimp when buying bicycle gear because it could one day save your life. You (hopefully) would never cut corners on your helmet, so you shouldn’t act any differently to the rest of your gear. There is no adjustable arch support that more expensive shoes from Giro offer. Some riders may seek these out for a complete fit but I found them to be comfortable straight from the box. La chaussure de VTT Cylinder™ II W offre un confort douillet avec la commodité et la précision d’une fermeture Giro’s toe spike kit comes with everything you need to install them on your Cylinder shoes. They’re relatively expensive, but they make a huge difference in almost every aspect. The Bottom Line About Giro’s Cylinder Cycling ShoesYou might also want to get a bike cover if your bike will be open to the elements whilst at work, school or elsewhere. A cover will protect your bike’s surface from wear and tear, helping to keep it in the best condition possible. Other features found in the Cylinder shoes include an injected nylon platefor efficient power transfer, a co-molded rubber and lugged outsole for high traction and durability, a mid-foot scuff guard, toe and heel microfiber reinforcements, and die-cut EVA insole footbeds with medium arch support.

A fresh pair of Crankbrothers cleats (top), compared to wear-and-tear after several rides and hike-a-bike sessions (bottom). Note the wear on the tow screws. Giro Cylinder Air Flow & Stiffness TPU upper material, OCLV carbon sole, stiffness index: 14 of 14, asymmetrical design for reduced top pressure, no-slip heel lining,GnardGuardouter material For small items we use Royal Mail's 48 service which has a delivery time of typically 2-3 days from dispatch; For pre-Christmas we now strongly recommend you upgrade from our standard post (Royal Mail 48) to either The sole of the Cylinder IIs is a co-moulded combination of a stiff nylon sole unit and grippy rubber-lugged tread. On the bike, the stiff sole keeps pedalling smooth and efficient while the rubber lugs dig into any surface should you have to hop off and hike-a-bike some trail sections. And for particularly muddy days, think typical winter cyclocross race, steel toe spikes can be added for more off-the-bike traction. When I looked over my notes for the Cylinder, the phrase ‘pretty good’ came up more than once – pretty good weight, pretty good stiffness, pretty good comfort, pretty good price. Even the outsole grip was pretty good.
