Over the past 5 years I have gotten a lot of questions about chunky knit blankets and how to make them. This pastime has also been highly recommended to help with improved memory and hand-eye coordination. Once you get your length of chains to the width that you want your blanket, it’s time to begin our first “real” sitches. Larger blankets will take longer than smaller blankets, and finer blankets will take longer than thicker blankets.

If you’d like to make your own blanket pattern, I’ve got a free tutorial that will help you do just that. Blanket patterns can generally be knit with any weight yarn, once you also adjust the needle size to suit. All of this will distribute the weight of your work more comfortably, helping to prevent fatigue and injury. If you’re not working from a pattern, then you should choose the size you want to knit, make a gauge swatch, and use that to determine the correct number of stitches to cast on for knitting the right size blanket. In your knitting pattern, there will be a section where all the sizes of the blanket are identified, along with their width and length.

But, once you have a couple inches of knitting on the needles it’s easy to get used to having plenty of room for all of the stitches! You would use slightly smaller needles, 4mm or size 6 US approx, for knitting a blanket with DK yarn. So if it starts to feel a bit awkward knitting your blanket as it grows, you can switch to a longer cable for more comfort. It isn't the short tips that deter folks for circulars come with long tips too, the length of a double point.

This chain is the foundation for your chunky knit blanket, so as wide as you want your blanket to be, is as wide as you make your length of chain stitches. The very last step is to turn your chunky knit blanket over and make sure all the spots where you joined the yarn is knotted tightly.Using this simple technique, all you need is yarn(we will go over the best yarns to use next), a flat surface like a table and your hands. Because of my technique using only your hands, it is actually quite simple and inexpensive to make a chunky knit blanket yourself.

Simply tight the new yarn onto the working yarn, hide the knot on the BACK of your blanket, that part is important! I’ll save you from making the same mistakes as I did and give you all the details on the best yarns to use for making DIY chunky knit blankets. Etsy’s 100% renewable electricity commitment includes the electricity used by the data centres that host Etsy. This amount includes seller specified domestic postage charges as well as applicable international postage, dispatch, and other fees. Lighter blankets and baby shawls knit with 4 ply or fingering weight yarn need 3 – 4mm needles, most often size 3. TIP: if you want to make a blanket but are only just learning to knit, or haven’t even started knitting yet, crocheting a blanket could be a better option for you. I also use circular needles for whatever I'm knitting, be it a headband, baby clothes, blankets or anything else.

Wool Coutures wooden knitting needles are finely sanded and glossed to make them super easy to work with.I can't imagine trying to wrangle a straight needle long enough to accommodate a good sized throw or blanket.
